LITERACY TUTOR

This 160-hour part-time certificate program is designed for volunteers or professionals who wish to develop or advance their ability to tutor literacy-level learners in college or community settings. Although the program’s main focus is on the adult literacy learner, many of the instructional techniques and theories of literacy acquisition taught within the program are also relevant to children and adolescents. Basic literacy, English as a Second Language, and learning disabilities are explored as areas of concentration within the general field of literacy practice.

Completion of the program’s first course, Introduction to Literacy Tutoring (Tutor 110) qualifies students to volunteer tutor at UCFV in the College and Career Preparation program (formerly ABE), the English as a Second Language program, or the Disability Resource Centre. This course is a prerequisite to the certificate program. Completion of individual courses within the Literacy Tutor certificate program provide general studies UCFV credits; completion of the certificate program will provide 12 block transfer credits to UCFV’s Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education program.
